The Sacraments of Christian Initiation
Christian Initiation incorporates us into Christ and forms us into God’s people. There are four Sacraments to be celebrated before completion of Christian Initiation.
Children are Baptised at the request of their parents, usually in the first year of life and in their local Parish. Click here for more information.
Confirmation completes what took place at Baptism. In Grade 3 (generally the year when a child turns eight) or later, the child is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation administered by the Bishop or his delegate. Click here for information on the next Confirmation program.
The Sacrament of Penance is a celebration of God’s love and mercy. In Grade 4 (generally the year when a child turns nine and the year after Confirmation) or later, the child learns what it means to examine their conscience and undergo a change of heart as they prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance through the First Rite with individual confession and absolution. Click here for information on the next Penance and First Holy Communion program.
The children are then welcomed to the Lord’s Table and receive Holy Communion for the first time. This is the climax of the Christian tradition process begun at Baptism. Eating and drinking with the rest of the community at the Table of the Lord is a sign of belonging fully to that community. Click here for information on the next Penance and First Holy Communion program.
Sacramental Preparation for Children
When parents have determined that their child is ready for the Sacraments of Confirmation, Penance or First Holy Communion, they make the formal request of the Parish for their child’s admission to Sacramental Preparation.
Each child is then enrolled in the Parish program for Sacramental Preparation.
Children prepare for the Sacraments at home with their family and within the Parish at Preparation Sessions.
It is expected that each child will be receiving ongoing instruction at home both before and after the time of celebrating the Sacraments.
Sacramental Preparation for Adults
Adults who have been Baptised and who wish to be initiated fully into the Church normally engage through a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults - RCIA. Click link (link to RCIA).
