The Sacrament of Marriage

Thank you for searching for information on weddings held at St Oliver Plunkett Church, Cannon Hill.

Catholics believe that God wants to be present with us

as we live out our vocation in life, whether that be as a single person, a priest, member of a religious order, or as a married person. These vocations call us all to holiness, but some vocations also need us to take vows to each other and to God. The Sacrament of Matrimony – what we commonly refer to as marriage - is a ritual union between a man and a woman who freely vow to love and uphold each other in a promise with God for the rest of their lives. Marriage calls married couples to holiness and to bring forth new life. The marriage sacrament often takes place during the Eucharistic liturgy, or a Nuptial Mass, but this is not necessary and can be undertaken separately.

The following are the details and information that are necessary when planning a wedding in the Parish or with the Parish Priest.

Notice

To complete the necessary legal and church application processes at least SIX months’ notice should be given of the intended marriage.

Church

Please book your Wedding date as soon as possible. Weddings are not celebrated in this Parish on certain days e.g. Sundays, Easter Saturday & Easter Sunday and during the Christmas season.

NB: The seasons of Advent and Lent are not the best times, liturgically, to be married.

Often there will be banners hanging in the altar area, which cannot be removed.

The Church is located within school grounds so weddings on school days are not held before 4pm.

Documentation Required

Birth Certificates and Baptism Certificates (original documents or Certified True Copies issued within the last 6 months) are needed as well as Passports if available and another form of current photo identification, preferably a current Driver’s License.

Marriage Courses

Federal regulations require that all couples attend a Marriage Preparation Course.

The Catholic Church offers such a service and information about these courses is available from Centacare, Brisbane (07) 3251 5000 or on their website: https://centacare.com/family-and-relationship-care/marriage-and-relationships-education/

Please arrange attendance at a course suitable to both of you before your first appointment with the Parish Priest. At the completion of the course, you will receive a letter which is to be given to the Priest. Also, the Priest will hold some discussions with you before the wedding so please ask the Parish Secretary to make an appointment with the Priest once you have enrolled in the course.

Flowers & Decorations

The couple are required to supply any flowers or decorations that they would like.

Please note: ROSE PETALS, RICE & CONFETTI are NOT permitted within Church grounds (Please include mention of this in your wedding booklet).

The church booking fee is $500 (payable when the booking is confirmed with the Parish Office) PLUS there is a Celebrant's fee of $400.

The Celebrant's fee can be paid to the Parish Priest at any time.

Once the booking fee has been made, please EMAIL a copy to:
